Terasology Minecraft like sandbox game with fancy graphic effects and a heavy focus on extensibility
Original Release: 7 August 2012
Latest Version: 5.2.0
License: Apache 2.0
Developer: Moving Blocks
A sandbox game that pays tribute to Minecraft in initial look and origin, but stakes out its own niche by aiming for the NPC helper and caretaker focus from such games as Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper, while striving for added depth and sophistication.
This is an open source project started by Benjamin “begla” Glatzel to research procedural terrain generation and efficient rendering techniques in Java using the LWJGL. The engine uses a block-based voxel-like approach as seen in Minecraft. You can check out his blog at Moving Blocks! The creators of Terasology are a diverse mix of software developers, game testers, graphic artists, and musicians.
Terasology is still impressive in its current state showing off fantastic graphics for a voxel based game through the small details in water animation, lighting effects and shadows particularly giving the game a consistent sense of quality. This is in addition to supporting the core mechanics of the genre which centralises itself around destroying and placing blocks to manipulate the generated game worlds.
Terasology Players have a choice between simply enjoying the game and helping to build new features. The game includes a multiplayer mode and add-on modules to change up gameplay.
