Open Source Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 – OpenRTC2
The game is an open source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 called OpenRCT2, The original game was created in Assembly1 and only ran on Windows and Xbox.
The Open Source remake expanding the game with new features, fixing bugs and raising game limits frequently over the years.
History of Rollercoaster Tycoon
In 1999, Chris Sawyer released the revolutionary and succesful game; RollerCoaster Tycoon (RCT). Many sequels later, the series remains popular to this day, and has inspired fans to develop an open source re-implementation.
The gameplay revolves around building and maintaining an amusement style theme park containing rides, attractions, shops and all the facilities you’d expect.
The player must try to make a profit and maintain a good park reputation whilst keeping the guests happy.
Parks can be free entry with pay per ride, or pay entry and rides are free, as many real life amusement parks are today.
It Also allows for both scenario and sandbox play.
Scenarios require the player to complete a certain objective in a set time limit whilst sandbox allows the player to build a more flexible park with optionally no restrictions or finance.
The original game progress is an attempt to decompile RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 into C. Originally written in MASM and Visual C++ where functions related to interfacing with the operating system were written in C (supposedly 1%), with the rest of the game being written in pure x86 assembly.
For an example of this method, OpenTTD was formed through a similar procedure; the original game, Transport Tycoon Deluxe, was decompiled into C which allowed for the addition of thousands of features to the game.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 uses the third version of Chris Sawyer’s engine, which shares some code with Transport Tycoon. This is reflected in the usage of OpenTTD 0.1 code such as the windowing system and graphics rendering.
While the version of the engine used in Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion is newer, ot is currently targeting the RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 engine to ease the decompilation process.
The aim is to completely decompile RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 into C so that cross-platform support, new features, and new gameplay can be added in a similar fashion to OpenTTD. With the addition of SDL2, the game can already be run in a resizeable window (which was not possible originally).
Once the game has been fully decompiled, additional gameplay features, gameplay tweaks, and improvements can be introduced.
The following is only a brief, non-exhaustive list of the possibilities – there are many more:
- User Interface theming.
- Fast-forwarding gameplay.
- Multiplayer support.
- Multilingual. Improved translations.
- OpenGL hardware rendering.
- Various fixes and improvements for bugs in the original game.
- Native support for Linux and macOS.
- Added hacks and cheats.
- Auto-saving and giant screenshots.
- Original bug fixes.
