This is a new alternative video game for an MS Windows PC’s. It was designed and developed by Rhys Paul Hovey. In its current version (1.666) it has been over two years in the making. SYNTH is 100% mathematically / procedurally generated. This means that for all of SYNTH’s graphics and levels, there is a mathematical function or process from which it was made, making it a very difficult game to program, and in the end quite scalable and unusual. Typically the graphics in a video game are “modelled” by artists with mouse and pen-like touchpads. Everything in SYNTH has a mathematical/algorithmic representation.

It is a strategic action game, in which the player must find an exit in a procedurally generated landscape. The player is equipped with a laser, bombs, and a device that acts as a vacuum or blower. The overall goal is to reach the highest level possible. It uses C++ algorithms to generate the level’s structure and graphics. Levels are seeded from four-letter words: for example, “BGNI” is the first level. As the game does not need to store pre-rendered textures and model data, only small filesizes are required. Synth’s drum and bass synthesizer soundtrack dynamically change during the game. The sounds were pre-composed by Hovey, but the player’s controls are mapped to a loop-sequence remixer.
