frets on fire or FoF is a free, open source Finnish music video game created by Unreal Voodoo.
Players use the keyboard to play along with markers which appear on the screen, with the aim to score points, achieve a high point multiplier, and complete a song.
FoF was the winner of the Assembly 2006 game development competition.
The game is written in the Python programming language and is licensed under the GNU General Public License, although the game incorporates other free and open source code under other licenses.
The game’s included song files and some internal fonts are proprietary, and their redistribution is not permitted outside of the Frets On Fire executable.
Frets on Fire is a video game that imitates the commercial game Guitar Hero. It is playable on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and GNU/Linux.
The player presses buttons in time to coloured markers, which appear on-screen, the markers are matched with the rhythm of the music.
Frets on Fire can be played by using a keyboard by pressing the fret buttons and pick buttons.
There is also support for joysticks, meaning that with the appropriate adapter and/or software, various guitar-type controllers can be used as well.
How to play the game
First of all, these are the keys you’ll need to navigate the menus:
Arrow keys
Change menu selection
Enter
Accept
Escape
Cancel
These keys are used in the game itself:
F1-F5
Frets one through five
Enter
Pick
Note that these keys are default keys and they can be changed from the game settings menu.
The easiest way to learn to play the game is to watch the tutorial. The basic idea is to press and hold the approriate frets when notes appear and tap the pick button when the notes hit the row of keys at the bottom of the screen. With longer notes, you need to hold the frets down for the whole duration.
You get points for hitting notes. For each ten correctly played notes, your score multiplier increases up to four times.
If you make a mistake, the score multiplier is reset back to one. For long notes, the longer you hold down the frets the more points you get. Chords award you twice the points of normal notes.
